Verse: Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name.
I am wealthy with the passions' riches, and I have been wrapped about with the robe of hypocrisy's deceit. I rejoice in the evils of wicked excesses, and I am shown forth as one measureless in heartlessness. I neglected my mind, and now I am cast down before the gates of repentance, famished and hungry for all good things, and through want of care I suffer sickness. But, O Lord, do thou make me like Lazarus instead, a pauper poor in sinning, and never give me over to torments in the flames unquenchable, where no finger shall sprinkle water to bring my tongue relief; but rather, O thou that lovest mankind, grant unto me a place in the bosom of Abraham.
Verse: The righteous shall wait for me, until thou recompense me. (Repeat the above idiomelon)
Verse: Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.
Your souls filled with an insatiable love, O holy Martyrs, ye did not deny Christ. Ye were condemned to various torments, and ye endured great sufferings, whereby ye cast down the tyrants' bold audacity. Ye preserved the Faith both steadfast and unassailable; to heaven ye have gone to dwell. Thus, in that ye have boldness before him, pray to him, beseeching him that he may bestow great mercy upon us.
Verse: Let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.
Jesus, as thou didst go on thy way * beyond the Jordan in the flesh, thou didst cry aloud * to those with thee: My friend Lazarus is now already dead, * and he is made ready to be placed in the tomb. * Thus for your sakes I am glad, * my friends, for you shall learn that I * have knowledge of all, for I am not parted from God, * though I have appeared as one that hath been born of man. * Let us then go forth unto him and bring him to life again, * so that death may see my triumph and utterly be brought to an end. * This shall I accomplish * and make manifest, thus granting great mercy to the world.
Verse: If thou, O Lord, shouldst mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? for with thee there is forgiveness.
Let us, ye faithful, follow the ways * of Martha and of Mary, and bring unto the Lord * our godly deeds as those that intercede, so that he may come * to raise up our understanding, which doth lie * outstretched, wrapped in fearsome death * in the tomb of indifference, * having no feeling of the fear of God, and devoid * of presence of mind, having no vital energy. * Let us cry out: Behold, O Lord, and, as thou didst once of old * by thy most fearsome authority bid thy friend Lazarus, Come forth, * thus in thy compassions, * O thou life-creator, grant thou great mercy unto all.
Verse: Because of thy name have I waited for thee, O Lord; my soul hath waited upon thy word, my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
Now Lazarus hath been in the tomb for two days; * he seeth all the dead from all ages. * There he beholdeth things both strange and fearsome, * a multitude numberless, * captives held in Hades' mighty bonds. * Wherefore his sisters wail with keening lament * as they behold before them his tomb. * But Christ shall come, that he may bring his own friend to life again; * hence all shall raise their voices as one in unison, while singing: * Blessed art thou, O Saviour; do thou have mercy on us.
